About Us Living the good life down on the farm |
Thompson Farms and T3 Quarter Horses is located along the Minnesota Valley Branch of Squaw Creek near Mound City in Northwest Missouri. We are the 5th generation to farm the land we live on. The land is mostly in row crop with some native grass CRP, some timber and a few small pastures. We got out of commercial cattle in the fall of 2009, mainly because Monty is in school and they became too much work for Jim and Lisa isn't as much help as she'd like to be. We have a small herd of Registered cows and in addition to her horses, LISA has a donkey, few pet Longhorns, a couple of Irish Dexters and some goats. Jim's dad was a respected stockman and a long time President of Producers Livestock Association. He was an accomplished horseman and was Lisa's mentor and partner in her Quarter Horse business until his death.
October 21, 2001, the farm house Jim's great grandfather built in 1886 was destroyed by fire. Out of this tragedy we were able to build our dream home. We had planned to move in Memorial Day weekend 2003, but sadly, Jim's father, Harold "Breezy" Thompson passed away after a courageous battle with cancer that very week. Although he never got to see the "finished product", occasionally I get a whiff of cigar smoke in the air and feel his presence. I know he watches over us and I picture him smiling that awesome warm smile and giving us a wink and a nod, for a job well done.

Jim
Jim was born and raised here on the farm and has been a farmer all of his life. His senior year in high school Jim was the first student from Mound City to achieve the FFA American Farmer Degree. He is a graduate of Kansas State University with a BS in Animal Science Jim also sells real estate, specializing in farms and hunting properties. He enjoys hunting, fishing, playing cards and golfing with his friends. (He also enjoys helping Lisa with her pet projects, although he makes a point of complaining about it while making fun of her sometimes unconventional ideas.) As a K-State alum, as does any self-respecting Wildcat, he bleeds purple. He loves to watch college football and basketball and his two favorite teams are K-State and whoever is playing KU. He is extremely proud of son, Monty who has followed in Dad's footsteps and become a fellow K-Stater.
Lisa
Lisa was born and raised near Springfield, Missouri. She is a graduate of Missouri State with a BS in Wildlife Management and a MS in Plant Ecology. After working in various positions with several government environmental agencies, she ended up in Mound City in 1987 working as a Soil Conservationist. There she met Jim. Lisa has always loved horses and wildlife and enjoyed being outdoors. Lisa was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2001 and in the fall of 2007 she took early retirement from the Natural Resources Conservation Service. She loves being on the farm full time and is currently in remission with only a few residual problems. She considers spending time outdoors with her animals on the farm as her therapy and credits it with her improved health. After retiring she added a few Longhorns, a couple of Irish Dexters, a donkey and a small herd of goats to her ever growing menagerie that already included the horses, what could be termed a small pack of dogs and a large pride of barn cats. She used to love to hunt, but now leaves that to Jim and just prefers to observe the abundant wildlife around the farm. In the spring of 2010 we will be adding a flock chickens to the mix
Monty
Yes, this is the same kid. Monty decided to cut his hair after his high school senior visit to K-State! Monty was born in 1990. He attends Kansas State University majoring in Mass Communications and was recently accepted into K-State's School of Journalism. He is an even bigger fan of Kansas State Football and Basketball than his dad. If you watch any of the home games on TV, you are likely to see him in the crowd shots. He is almost always on the front row just left of center court. He seems to be a camera magnet and has had close-ups appear in several news papers, was on the front inside cover of the 2009 K-State yearbook, has been interviewed on local TV and has had numerous close-up shots on Fox Sports Network and ESPN. That's him on the right next to Willie with his face in the ESPN camera.
When he's not attending K-State football or basketball games he's either working out or hanging with his friends playing X-Box or watching sports on TV. In High School, he was very active in FFA. He was Star Greenhand his freshman year, Star Chapter Farmer his sophomore year, and earned the State Farmer and American Farmer Degrees his senior year. He earned an FFA Beef Production Proficiency Award with his registered Braunviehs and commercial herd of Balancers, but probably won't make a career of farming. He wants to work in sports broadcasting and I'm sure he will.
