GOATS!! or as Jim said Goats???????
|
|
New to the farm in 2009 - GOATS - Natures weed-eaters! Lisa is all about diversity and she has added goats to her "experimental projects" in rotational and natural grazing. The goats are currently pastured with the Longhorns and Maude the donkey. The goats prompted another addition to the family, Arthur the Great Pyrenees. We adopted him after his original family lost their farm and had to move to town. Arthur is an experienced goat, chicken and cat farm guardian. He is real gentle giant but he hates raccoons. He proudly presented us with 5 dead raccoons and one dead possum shortly after he arrived. GOOD DOG!! They say that you either are a goat person or you're not. Jim wasn't too sure about the goats when Lisa first brought them home but after he got to know them, he became a goat person too. Bucks make a "barking" noise when excited. Jim has particularly bonded with Victor, (maybe its because they both have goat-tees). They enjoy "barking" at each other at feeding time. A special thanks to Cordelia Brown of Rocky Road Farms for allowing us to start our herd. Visit Cordelia at www.cordeliabrown.com Zola wasn't too sure about Arthur when they first met, but now they're best friends.

Puff, born Feb. 1, 2001 is a retired dairy goat. Her dam, a Saanen doe named Norma Jean, was the 2002 Tonganoxie/ Leavenworth, Kansas Grand Champion Milker. Her sire was a La Mancha buck and and she inherited her tiny ears through her La Mancha ancestry. La Mancha's characteristically have "gopher" ears that are only about 1 1/2 inches long. The "wattles" hanging on her neck are characteristic of her Saanen side. She came to us from Rocky Road Farms with Victor and their kid, Zola. Puff was bred by Cosmic Caprines, Douglas, Kansas. |

Lola, Lila and Lily, a set of 08 triplets from Auburn, Nebraska. They were from registered Boer stock, but their former owner just wanted them as weed goats, so he never registered them. I put them in with the other goats as soon as I got them in late June. Boer goats cycle year round and Victor immediately bred all three of them. |

Lily gave us our
first kids Dec. 7, 2009. A pair of twins, a buckling and a doeling. Willie
and Bonnie. It was the coldest day of the year so far at 17 degrees, but
both kids did great.
The next day it was 11 below and Lola gave us a set of twins. Unfortunately on of them had frozen to death before we found them. The other was extremely hypothermic, but we got him warmed up and he survived Lila kidded a single a few days later and the kid appeared to be doing fine, but was dead the next morning. I learned a valuable lesson - don't kid in December!!!!

Agnes is Puff and Victor's spring 2010 doeling, born March 26th. She looks just like mom! Puff had triplets this year, but only two survived. |

Albert is Puff and Victor's spring 2010 buckling, born March 26th. He has been weathered and will be kept as a pet. He has one ear like his dad that hangs down and one from his Sannen heritage that stands up. Oddly, he has only one wattle. He's a little momma's boy and always seems to be "hooked on". |

Calypso and her
twins Shelby and Jordan came to us from Jodi Hayes at Goats of Plenty farms at Holden,
Missouri. Calypso is half commercial Boer and half commercial Spanish.
Yes, they are on the porch! Calypso doesn't know she's a goat and prefers to hang around with people and dogs instead of the other goats. She follows me around while I chore. |

Shelby 2010 doeling out of Calypso and sired by a Kiko buck. Love that dorsal stripe! Shelby looks like a dun goat! Shelby also likes to follow me around to the barn doing chores. They may be barn goats this winter. Champ likes them and sticks his nose through the panel to sniff and greet them when they come to the barn. |

Jordan 2010 doeling out of Calypso and sired by a Kiko buck. Jordan looks like a grulla goat, so of course she is my favorite! Jordan likes to be snuggled and is the friendliest of the kids. |
